What is Glycerol Monolaurate & monolaurin?

Monolaurin is a chemical made from lauric acid, which is found in cocount oil and human breast milk. 
Monolaurin is used for the common cold, flu (influenza), shingles (herpes zoster), and other infections, but there is no good scientific evidence to support its use.
In foods, monolaurin is used in the production of ice cream, margarine, and spaghetti.
In manufacturing, monolaurin is used in making cosmetics, detergents, and insecticides.

How to use Glycerol Monolaurate & monolaurin ?

 

Both GML and lauric acid were effective in inhibiting biofilm development as measured by decreased numbers of viable biofilm-associated bacteria as well as decreased biofilm biomass.

 

Compared with lauric acid on a molar basis, GML represented a more effective inhibitor of biofilms formed by either S. aureus or E. faecalis.

Glycerol Monolaurate & monolaurin in feed:

Alpha-monolaurin is a fat-like, heat-stable molecule produced by the esterification of lauric acid and glycerol.

 

Due to the chemical characteristics of alpha-monolaurin, the molecule is pH independent and will not dissociate in the intestinal tract (pH around 6-6.5). Moreover, alpha-monolaurin can be absorbed into the lymphatic system and bloodstream. and Monoglycerides have stronger antibacterial effects than their free fatty acids.

 

In Feed field, it has been shown that it is possible to suppress infections with Streptococcus at pig farms when the preventive use of Amoxicillin is replaced by this additive.

 

The developers of this additive usually replace the preventive use of Amoxicillin with FRA C 12 early on in the lactation feed at a dose level of 2 kg/tonne of feed, followed by 4 kg/tonne of prestarter feed and 2-3 kg/tonne of starter feed.
